Rolex. Fine and Sought After Submariner Automatic Wristwatch in Steel, Reference 5513, With Black DialEstimate € 6000 - 12000
Model: Submariner Rolex launched the references 5512 and 5513 in 1962 as the next generation of the legendary Submariner line. Unlike their earlier predecessors, the new references featured crown guards, which gave this tool watches a more robust look, as well as protected the crown during diving of any unnecessary mishaps. The 5513 has a bezel with minute divisions for the first fifteen minutes and silver triangle, the dial can alternatively be glossy or matte with white signature. The depth is rated to 660 ft, and, as of 1964, the designation “Swiss T<25” was added to the bottom of the dial. The present watch impresses by its original and well-preserved condition of the stainless steel case. The bezel has completely preserved its initial dark black color, and highlights a very low use of the watch, but the most fascinating part of this lot is for sure its dial. The tone of the luminous numerals and hands harmonize perfectly with black dial. Out of production in 1989, this lot is one of the best examples of reference 5513 you could find in all marketplace. Model: Datejust When facing a Rolex Datejust the “anniversary” theme is constantly present because the first ever Datejust model was presented to the world in 1945 and created to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Rolex brand. On this occasion the iconic Jubilee bracelet was also introduced, which from that moment on was inextricably linked to the “just date” model. Advancing until 1985, to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Datejust and the 80th of the brand, Rolex decided to introduce another version of the Jubilee, no longer a bracelet but a special dial featuring a repetitive “Rolex-Rolex” pattern engraved on the entire surface of the quadrant. Useless underline the high level of craftsmanship needed to realize such an impeccable dial not only for the tri-dimensional pattern itself, but also for the application of the gold numerals on such an uneven surface. The lot offered here is a precious specimen of reference 116243 in steel and yellow gold with jubilee bracelet consigned in great condition, with unpolished case showcasing perfect edges and proportion: the mark of a timepiece that has hardly ever seen a wrist in its life. The dial features the Jubilee decoration in a very electric champagne with allover the Rolex pattern and diamond-set indexes. This detail is recalled on the bezel that is also embellished with 52 diamonds with brilliant cut. Model: Day-Date The Day-Date has been at the top of Rolex non-sports collection since 1958. 57 year later, at Baselworld 2015, it was released a specimen representing a true mixture of modern charm and vintage aesthetic: the reference 228206, with a massive 40 mm case in platinum. The case is the traditional Rolex Oyster one with a 3 body case, with a screw down back and crown and a smooth bezel. The bezel on this platinum version of the Day-Date differs from its lesser cousins in that it dispenses with the iconic fluted bezel in favour of a smooth, polished one, probably given the fact that platinum is way more difficult to machine. The present lot is offered in extremely valuable conditions with no evident signs of wearing both on case and on the platinum president bracelet. The ice blue used on the dial is charming. Model: Speedmaster Rattrapante The Speedmaster is one of the most iconic watches ever made by any manufacturer. In 1999 was introduced a new version of this model, the first one in Omega’s history, bearing the split-seconds complication. Only few of these watches have been made during a short time span from 1999 untill 2001/2002. The slightly different case of this model compared to the classic Speedmaster has lapidated lugs, a tachometer graduation on the steel bezel up to 350UPH, rectangular pushers and a screwed-down case back with Speedmaster logo, all preserved in very nice conditions. Model: Submariner During the years many references have been realized, starting from the 6204 in 1953, passing through the 6538 Big crown or Coroncione, the 5513 and the 1680, the first model with date indication. Firstly, produced in stainless steel only, with the changes of tastes were also offered models entirely made with other materials, such as yellow gold, going to subvert the starting idea of a predominantly resistant watch, made of steel, with another one of elegance and versatility thanks to the use of gold. In 1979 a further change of pace, with the introduction of a new reference which added the novelty of the sapphire crystal instead of the classic plexiglass one. Was so born the 16 800 in stainless steel and the 16 808 in full 18k yellow gold, like the present lot. This reference (such as the 16 800) have the quick date change and remained in production untill the 1987 and examples in nice conditions with full set such as the present one are very difficult to find. Model: Explorer The story begins in 1952 when number of climbers travelled to the Tibet and China border as part of a research trip in preparation for the 1953 assault of Everest and Rolex wanted to help in this venture giving them its first prototype Explorer in a 36mm steel case called Big-Bubbleback. A few years later, in 1959 the Explorer model 1016 was launched, it was the first Explorer to be marked 'Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified' on the dial, and was also the first to feature minute marks which went to the very edge of the dial. This example is one of this family and it comes in untouched conditions with sharp case and oyster riveted bracelet. The Dial is perfect aged with its black matte color and the well-know 3,6,9 indexes filled with tritium turned into a ocre color that identifies this model. Model: Explorer The conditions in the high mountains represent the ideal environment for evaluating the reliability and robustness of a watch. For Rolex, the Himalayas were the best natural laboratory. Most people believe that the Explorer I was launched by Rolex for commemorating the Everest expedition and that this watch was with British explorer team consisting of Edmund Hillary, Sherpa Tenzing Norgay and John Hunt on 29th, May of 1953, achieving a great task of human being climbing. This story is definitely magic and attractive, but it still has a certain distance to the real fact. Rolex indeed had supported Himalayan expedition since 1933, and later in Everest expeditions, Rolex had been always the official supporters, so Rolex endorsed each explorer team with its wristwatch. During the first half of the twentieth century, the Himalayas and its untouched peaks aroused the interest of nations and fascinated mountaineers from all over the world. Everest in particular, this colossus overlooking the mythical mountain range, has been the subject of great interest. This call for the highest peaks, felt on an international scale, combined with the possibility of testing their watches "in real life", has led Rolex to join numerous teams of pioneering mountaineers. Between 1933 and 1955, seventeen expeditions equipped with watches of the brand set off to conquer the highest peaks. These watches have witnessed several "first" ascents, starting with Everest in 1953, the highest peak in the world with its 8,848 meters, followed by K2 in 1954, the second highest peak in the world with its 8,611. meters, from Mount Kangchenjunga in 1955, the third highest peak in the world with its 8,586 meters and from Mount Makalu in the same year, the fifth highest peak in the world with its 8,485 meters. The Explorer was based on the already existing tough and hard wearing bubbleback, which has been modified by Rolex for the more active and adventurous customer. In 1952, the references 6098 and 6150 (both using the A296 movement) were in fact the first prototypes of Explorer to be used by climbers; they were watches with white dials and leaf shaped hands and did not bear the name Explorer yet. Returning from each of these expeditions, the climbers, through their feedback, have contributed to improving the performance of future Rolex watches. Thus, just as movement feeds on the gestures of the wearer, watchmaking technology has progressed thanks to the exploits of explorers, to better accompany them in the challenges that have made it possible to discover the less accessible places on the planet. In 1953, the same year that Hillary successfully climbed Mount Everest, the results of these models became the reference 6350, like the present lot, when they were fitted with the “Explorer” moniker on the dial, making it the first “real” Explorer ever produced by Rolex. As such, all references before the 6350, are often dubbed “pre-Explorer.” Although Rolex had registered the trade mark of Explorer in Geneva on 26th, Jan of 1953. As mentioned, all of the pre-Explorer references do not sport uniform dial layouts the way all true Explorer references have. With this official reference 6350 "explorer", the climbers were equipped for the mission on K2, one of these specifically is proposed to the mountaineer Ugo Angelino, in fact it was precisely in 1954 that Ardito Desio chose him as one of the mountaineers who would face the expedition to K2 of the same year. The Karakorum, 8,611 meters, is the second highest peak in the world. Second compared to Everest (8,848 meters), but first in terms of difficulty due to its characteristics: steep walls, extremely difficult climbing passages, unpredictable weather and storms that last for days. Everest, a few degrees further south, is less steep and is considered affordable even for relatively less experienced climbers and that is testified by the fact that over 3000 people in the course of history managed to reach the top of the Everest, while for the K2 only less than 300. Previously, Angelino had taken part in the training at Plateau Rosa, along with other climbers who aspired to take part in the expedition. He himself, after training, took care of compiling the list of materials needed to be transported to Pakistan among these he inserted the watches that at that time were on everyone's lips having already passed the Everest test, we are talking about this Rolex Explorer watch present in this auction. Since that day, due to these successes in these various missions, Rolex made people talk about themselves all over the world and decided to change its company policy, moving to the creation of tool watches, in order to help operators in the sector such as aviators, divers, speleologist, regatisti, pilots, laboratory physicists exposed to strong magnetic fields and many others, in everyday life. Rolex therefore decided, starting from the basic concept of watches with an oyster case that guaranteed their water resistance, and the perpetual automatic movement, the creation of new specific models, as we know them today, such as the most iconic Daytona, Submariner, Gmt Master, Yatch Master up to Milgauss. Agatha Christie once said "One coincidence is just a coincidence, two coincidences are a clue, three coincidences are a proof”, and by following this idea, Rolex understood that, based on the actual excellent results of its creations subjected to extreme environments, the way to go was probably slightly different than the first one undertaken by Hans Wisdorf. Therefore, no longer watches produced with precious materials and with fascinating complications such as “moon-phases” or “triple calendar”, but rather tool-watches, suitable for challenges and extreme environments, but also perfect for everyday-life. The Maison realized that the elite of the population was no longer the only target to aspire to, but rather the whole world! Wilsdorf understood that a change of course was necessary, dedicating its production to watches that the entire population had the possibility of accessing. And it was precisely this last clue that made things clear: the audacious expedition to the Karakorum in 1954 in which Ugo Angelino took part, definitively contributed to marking the road then followed up to the present days. A tiny, efficient and gorgeous watch led the road to what for almost 70 years has marked the times of Rolex creations: the watch that went on the K2, the watch that changed everything, the watch that is offered now to you by Monaco Legend Group! Going into the details of this specimen, as with most early Rolex models, the dial is gilt (golden type print) and is a so called chapter ring (due to the ring around the outer circumference of the dial). Model: Gmt-Master The world’s largest airline Pan Am commissioned a specially designed watch allowing their pilots to keep track of time in two locations and ollowing the success of the reference 6542, Rolex introduced in 1959 the following reference 1675 which remained in production until 1980. The lot offered here is an astonishing specimen of 1675 with special features: the stainless steel case is in great conditions with a well-preserved Pepsi bezel and the luminous material has aged nicely gaining a cream-brown together with its hands but the most importat thing is the "Quraysh Hawk" logo, printed on the dial in different 'padded layers' that create a tri-dimensional effect. The present watch was presented as a gift by the then-Minister of Defense to an American friend working in Dubai, Mr. Raymond Trahan. Raymond Trahan played an important role in completing some of the largest oil platform constructions in the region and met Sheikh Mohammed in the mid 70’s becoming good friends. In 1978 Raymond was invited to a skeet shooting competition with the royal family of Dubai. As an award for winning the competition, he was gifted this Rolex GMT 1675 watch by Sheikh Mohammed himself. The back case of this extraordinary example is engraved: “PRESENTED TO R. TRAHAN, BY SHAIKH M B R AL-MAKTOUM, MINISTER OF DEFENSE, ON APRIL 2.78”. Featuring the United Arab Emirates (UAE) crest and the Arabic text translated as “Ministry of Defense” the present specimen stands out not only for its rarity and its history but also for its extraordinary condition. Model: Dato-Compax Made for approximately 20 years, the family of Dato Compax includes references 4767, 5036, 6036, and 6236 and has to be considered a landmark model as it represents the first foray of Rolex into the market of complicated timepieces: offering a chronograph function with triple calendar, there was no other Rolex chronograph model presenting more complications. These models were available in either stainless steel, yellow gold, or pink gold, with a variety of different dial designs. Reference: 907 The late 1920’s and early 30’s saw Rolex at its top for creativity and dynamism. Having launched the world’s first truly waterproof and commercially successful (Oyster) watch in 1926, this relatively young company, established in 1906, went on to launch its first automatic waterproof wristwatch, the Oyster Perpetual Chronometer in 1934. In the 30’s Rolex, also presented some watches powered by a more sophisticatedly assembled movement, making use of micrometer regulators and capped sapphire end stones that were and still are today known as “Observatory”. The use of such a regulator allowed for increased precision, and friction-reducing capped jewels made for superior oil reservoirs, adding up to a properly consummate caliber worthy of the observatory title. Model: Submariner Rolex launched the references 5512 and 5513 in 1962 as the next generation of the legendary Submariner line. Unlike their earlier predecessors, the new references featured crown guards, which gave these tool watches a more robust look, as well as protected the crown during diving of any unnecessary mishaps. Model: Calatrava With Patek Philippe Certificate of Origin confirming the movement, case material, caliber, refrence and the sale in 1968.Less than 1000 examples produced, approximately only 8 years of manufacturing and just one material used: these are some of the features that define to reference 3466. From 1962 to 1970 Patek Philippe has ventured into the production of this particular model setting aside precious materials such as yellow or rose gold or platinum in favor of the humble, practical and always appreciated stainless steel. The present lot is an example of one of the later models, attested by the flatter case back and printed signature on the dial. The solid, straight and sharp lugs are what characterize more this appreciated model together with its caliber, the 27–460, also know among collectors as “la grande dame des automatiques Suisse,” with its full 18k yellow gold rotor, beautifully and lavishly engine-turned which remained in production until 1985. Fresh to the market, the present lot not only is a highly important new discovery of Nautilus in stainless steel but is part of a very limited series of specimens made under special order for the Royal household of the Sultanate of Oman as testified by the white Khanjar logo at 6 o’clock.This “Khanjar” watch was for sure commissioned to the retailer Asprey of New Bond Street in London since no official watch agents were available in Oman, making necessary to go directly abroad to obtain such a precious piece.Until the appearance of the present watch, only three examples in stainless steel have appeared to the market:- the first bearing case no. 536’201 and movement no. 1’304’954 was sold by Christie’s, Geneva, on 14 May 2012, lot 315.- the second with the immediately preceding case number of 536’200 and movement number of only two digits difference, 1’304’952, was sold by Christie’s, Dubai, on 19 October 2016, lot 137.- the third had case no. 536'186 and movement no. 1'304'895, sold by Christie’s, Geneva, on 20 May 2020, lot 96.The latter one is precisely one number away for both case and movement from the lot offered today, which has case no. 536'187 and movement no. 1'304'896. Both these watches were manufactured in 1978 and subsequently sold on 31 July 1978 as confirmed by the extract from the archives, as a testimony that were part of a special order for His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said al Said.It is interesting to notice that all four of these exceptional Nautilus watches have serial numbers within close proximity of each other, all between 536'185 and 536’201, suggesting that the specimens produced with this unique dial could be less than 20 units.This particular example is preserved in very notable conditions, with very limited signs of wear and never having been polished, the sharp bevels, angles and curves are perfectly preserved. The number of production of these objects is really low and even lower is the number of pieces that has passed through the auction market: for this reason the lot offered here is a really rare chance and opportunity to purchase an unusual example of high craftsmanship. The present watch is part of a small series of 200 openface dress watches made as of 1953 to special order for the household of King Saud bin Abdul Aziz, in commemoration of his accession to the throne the same year, after his father and country’s first King Abdul Aziz al Saud passed away. For this series has been used the reference 600/1 especially realized with enamel dial, while the reference 600 had a standard metal dial: it is interesting to notice that these two reference despite being almost identical had a different diameter (5.8 mm the first one and 4.8 mm the second one). This watch distinguishes itself for its very good overall conditions and the beauty of the ivory-coloured enamel dials with ruby-set numerals. The King’s portrait has been executed with the complex technique of the Grand Feu or Big Fire and the result is simply perfect. These creations were given as gifts to dignitaries or friends of His Majesty and nowadays are extremely rare find. Model: Octo L'Originale The Octo collection was launched in 2012 and represent Bulgari’s use of innovative materials and highest precision, becoming a major player in the luxury sports watch market in just a few short years. Inspired by the arches of Maxentius Basilica in the Roman Forum, the Octo displays a distinct, eye-catching appearance, leek taught lines and powerful appearance. The Octo exists in a variety of metals such as titanium, steel, ceramic and pink gold but recentrly Bulgari offered to the market and incredibly astonishing version in white gold with full-diamond set: the Octo L’Originale, such as the present lot. Just to make clear the preciousness of this lot will be needed the help numbers: on the case, bracelet, and crown, you've got 979 baguette cut diamonds at VVS quality.. On the dial, you've got 192 baguette cut diamonds at VVS quality and one round rose cut diamond at VVS quality, totaling approximately 7.74 carats. This means a total of 1,172 stones totaling OVER 50.25 carats! Despite all of the stones, the case's architecture is still extremely clear and crisp. As you get closer and closer to the center of the dial, you need smaller and smaller baguettes, and finding stones that were small enough with the right geometry was tough, moreover the numerals and hour markers are set in between the stones, and the logo is printed on the underside of the crystal. To make the present model more desirable and precious compare to similar full-diamonds creations by Patek Philippe or Audemars Piguet is that the Octo is set entirely with baguette-cut diamonds, not smaller brilliant-cut stones, so the cost-per-carat is higher compared to the others. The only round-cut stone is the one set into the crown. Offered in basically unworn conditions, the lot also comes with its original box and papers and is definitely one of the most shining and highly crafted specimens ever appeared on the market in recent years. Model: Daytona Over the years, the Daytona model has strengthened its position among collectors, connoisseurs or simple enthusiasts as one of the most loved and desired models. Its history begins in 1963 when the first model was introduced, the 6239. Subsequently other references were produced as the 6241, 6262 and 6264, but the true turning point happened in 1969 when 6263 and 6265 were simultaneously launched, both with the wording “Oyster” on the dial, present for the first time in the history of the Daytona, and the innovative screw pushers. Success initially failed to arrive but time has then given reason to Rolex considering the fever that has arisen in recent years for these models. Model: Very Flat The present reference 6512 offered here is interesting due to the case that is considerably thinner than the standard Oyster case: measuring only 9 mm, it obtained the award of the thinnest Oyster case made by Rolex. It is equipped with a caliber 1000 which was made for only one year, in 1955 and makes this watch a really collectible piece for fanatics. The Ref. 25770ST is part of the very first, larger Royal Oak Offshore collection which was conceptualized and introduced in the 1990ies. In production from 1963 to 1970, the finishes of this particular model surprise at every single glance. Model: Chronograph During the history of watchmaking, many brands have dedicated themselves to the creation of cases of particular shape able to amaze and steal the heart of collector. Moreover, if to this is added one of the most important calibers ever manufactured by a brand and a totally unusual configuration to express the chronometric registration, automatically that watch becomes an amazing piece. Longines from this point of view can absolutely be considered an innovative brand and one examples is provided by the here offered Minute Counter. At a first glance it might seem like a simple chronograph but its peculiarity lies in the highly unusual arrangement of the chronographic hands: instead of having the minutes register at 3 o’ clock, there is a supplementary central hand for the minutes while the subsidiary counter are used for 12 hours registration and constant seconds. The caliber used is the 13ZN and is stored into a three bodies stainless steel case of 39 mm diameter with snap on back excellently preserved by the past owner. The silver dial is wondrous for its daintiness with an electric blue tachymeter scale that complete it. Model: Royal Oak When hearing the name Audemars Piguet, thoughts immediately go to the legendary Royal Oak. Iconic as very few other models have been in the history of horology, it is the umpteenth creation of the immortal designer Gerla Genta. Launched at Baselworld in 1972, it represented a real novelty in the Audemars universe as it was the brand’s first true sporting pride. Model: Pre-Daytona Produced from the early 1960 until 1967, the reference 6238 became known as the “Pre-Daytona” because following this model, Rolex removed the tachymeter scale from the dial and added it to the bezel. Quality 6238s are extremely rare to find and the present specimen is certainly one of the most exclusive, attractive and well-preserved examples of reference 6238 to appear on the auction market. First of all, the quality of the watch itself, with a three-body case in yellow gold that shows hardly any signs of wear, retaining its crisp edges, factory finishing, and original proportions. The Oyster riveted bracelet as well is still very nice with its Rolex clasp. What really makes the present lot an extremely desirable wristwatch is the gorgeous and rare black lacquered dial.
